English modality and Saudi EFL students

This study explored the competence of Saudi EFL students in use English modality. It aimed to: 1) Identify students’ level regarding modal verbs; 2) Identity modal(s) they most accurately; 3) Examine whether there is a significant difference their ability attributed to semantic function expressed by modality; and 4) Determine impacts modals. An existing test was adapted, developed, administered 31 at three universities Kingdom Arabia. Findings revealed low proficiency modals—only 24.35% items were correctly answered. Might used modal—37.09% it accurately. The found differences between modals sematic function. Significant also possibility obligation for sake possibility, volition obligation. However, no responses reported. emphasized greater academic space component adoption learner-appropriate pedagogies.
